"Cross media convergence and synergy are vital processes in the successful marketing of media products to audiences." To what extent do you agree with this statement in relation to your media area?
I would agree with this statement in that media convergence and synergy are vital processes in the successful marketing of media products to audiences. It is now considered to be more important as social networks such as Facebook and Twitter play a big part within the marketing of films. There is also YouTube a company which promotes film trailers when synergised or converged with certain films.

The idea of convergence is where media company's accidentally work together and promote the products. Most film trailers are put onto YouTube which wasn't intentionally made to show film trailers however now shows mainly all of them, this is an example of convergence as it YouTube was not intentionally there to promote film trailers but has accidentally. There is also social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, these advertise media products as users of these servers can see this content reaching their target audience.

Synergy is where a media product and a company intentionally collaborate for an advantageous outcome, this is good because this then promotes films gathering a wider audience and creating hype. An example of synergy is TV adverts, internet adverts and trailers in cinemas. This promotes both the company and media product which

Task 3 - Marketing
5 secrets to the film's success

1) Anderson’s World- The director’s eye for detail is a merchandiser’s dream. “Budapest” features a collection on eBay, a partnership initiated by actor and frequent Anderson collaborator Waris Ahluwalia (whose own fashion label is House of Waris). The film’s production designer Adam Stockhausen also curated an art collection inspired by the film. Auction items range from bow ties and moustache wax to promotional materials from the pic. Some are selling out, including copies of “The Society of the Crossed Keys,” Anderson’s book of selections from the writings of Stefan Zweig, which inspired the film.
2) Unique Promotions- Fox Searchlight is touring a large-scale model of the hotel in theaters from Hollywood to Berlin. And U.K.-based Secret Cinema, a monthly gathering that combines live performances involving audience participation, recently screened “Budapest” instead of its usual classic fare. The film already has grossed nearly $15 million in Blighty.
3) Viral Chow- Fox Searchlight created instructional featurettes detailing how to create baked goods inspired by the film’s colorful Mendl’s pastries. The videos went viral as fans sent back footage of their creations, which Searchlight used in TV spots on cooking networks. The distrib shot eight marketing shorts, including a profile of the film’s central character, M. Gustave, played by Ralph Fiennes.
4)Young Moonrisers- Thanks to the success of 2012’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” Gilula says Anderson’s fans have gotten significantly younger. “He’s attracted a whole new generation, some of whom weren’t even born when ‘Royal Tenenbaums’ (2001) and ‘Bottle Rocket’ (1996) were released,” the exec notes.
5) Universal Access- Cool marketing would mean little if the film itself were poorly received. However, “Budapest” has generated a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes — behind only Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” Critics have called “Budapest” his most accessible film. “We don’t see the ceiling yet,” Gilula says.

How did Anderson use the QE2 to market the film?

Task 4 - Opinion

Why would a big Six company be interested in supporting a smaller distribution company like Fox Searchlight?
Which audience category best describes The Grand Budapest Hotel (Mainstream, Mainstream plus, officianados, )
Why might the use of Ultraviolet alienate the film's audience?
Why might the use of secret cinema work as viral marketing for the film?

Avengers

  • the issues raised by media ownership in contemporary media practice; (how does who owns a media company influence the type of film made and its potential success? For example do BIG companies make BIG films and therefore make all the money? Is it possible for small companies to succeed?)
Big film companies generally create blockbusters which are produced to gross large amounts of money, to be a blockbuster films have to fit a certain criteria which is: A level star, a newsworthy budget, spectacular visual effects and not be a comedy. Marvel Entertainment owns the Marvel studios and as they are well known for owning Marvel comics they are always creating superhero films from the original comic books.
  • the importance of cross media convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing; (how do companies work together to produce, distribute and publicize a film? How can Disney use their size to promote and publicise a film? How can small companies work together to promote their business' when making and promoting a film?)
In the Avengers film the convergence and synergy in production is very important. This is because characters in the Avengers come from other films such as Captain America, The Hulk, Thor ect. All these characters help to publicize Disney along with media marketing such as links to YouTube releasing trailers and marketing on social media to get audiences excited.
  • the technologies that have been introduced in recent years at the levels of production, distribution, marketing and exchange; (how has the introduction of digital film, 3D, DVD, Blue Ray, internet streaming, downloadable content, home cinema influenced the types of films made, the way we watch them and the way we 'buy' them?)
By introducing 3D into films this has added excitement about watching films from a different outlook making people want to go watch and experience films in 3D. However recently 3D films have became less popular due to the price of tickets increasing, therefore some audiences would rather just watch in 2D. As for DVDs this allows people to enjoy films in their own homes and watch them over and over again, Blue ray also allows people to enjoy HD films within their own homes, this attracts people as they then don't have to go and pay for the cinema for the whole family. As for internet streaming and downloadable content, this saves people a lot of  money as they can enjoy the films in their households without having to pay, it is easy to access and watch films. These all affect the influence on films at the box office due to it leading to a lower gross as people would rather turn to another option than going to the cinema but it means the overall gross for films will then increase.
  • the significance of proliferation in hardware and content for institutions and audiences; (how and why have film companies had to alter the way they work now everyone has web enabled phones, PC's, consoles etc? How have audiences changed their viewing habits now we no longer need to go to the cinema to watch a film)
From advances in technology films are now available to view on smart phones, PC's and consoles, from this people are more likely to stay at home and use websites such as Netflix to watch films rather than going out to cinema and paying money. It is easier to access and works out a lot cheaper.
  • the importance of technological convergence for institutions and audiences; (can you think of examples of how different technologies have come together to help the film industry?)
Because of YouTube, twitter and Facebook these advertise the films making audiences produce hype and get excited about new films being produced. YouTube releasing trailers and social media such as twitter and Facebook release web adverts.
  • the issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences (specifically, British) by international or global institutions; (how do film companies try and attract their audience? Do they do different things in different countries?)

  • the ways in which the candidates’ own experiences of media consumption illustrate wider patterns and trends of audience behaviour. (what is your opinion on the above? Do you see the developments as a good or bad thing?)

Representation of ethnicity

Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of ethnicity:
In this extract the mise en scene represents ethnicity in the way the characters are shown. All the characters are wearing dark colours and in suits and formal attire which is not stereotypical dress for a black man. Both Danny and the woman in the clip look as if they are spy's, this is against the stereotype as he is a black male and the woman looks eastern European. The man in the background is in typical terrorist costume wearing a balaclava and holding a gun. The room this clip is set in is very dark and oppressive reflecting what is happening within the clip linking back to ethnicity and the idea of terrorism.

The sound in the clip also links to ethnicity as the diegetic music sounds like the religious song Muezzin which is the call to prayer. The music sounds Arabic and very intense, there is also a Spanish guitar in the background which gives a sense of otherness as it is not British. The music and the Arabic sound reflects the mood in the scene of the black versus Arab between characters showing hatred and a culture clash. At the start of the clip there is also diegetic sound of drumming creating suspense and this highlights that an event is about to happen.

As for the editing there are lots of cuts used, this links to ethnicity as this shows the bravery of the black man and shows he is strong, the short cuts show that the Arab character is stereotypically evil, shifty and untrustworthy. There is also use of longer cuts where it shows the white man crying linking to binary opposites where the black characters are shown in shorter cuts and the white character in longer cuts.

In the clip the camera angles and shots represent ethnicity, there is many uses of close ups in the clip which shows the characters reactions. When the camera is on a close up on Danny the camera slightly shakes as it is being hand held, this shows his anger towards the other character and links to ethnicity as black people are stereotypically loud and angry. There is use of low angle shot on the black character which could show he is less important as it shows him looking up at the terrorist which shows that he holds all the power in the situation. This reflects ethnicity in society as black people are known to being at the bottom holding no power. There is use of slow motion when the white people react to Danny's death, they only show slight emotion showing his death could be less important to them. The white people are shown in a different location as they hear over the phone, this shows that white people are law abading and safe, out of harms way. This links back to the reflection of society in the way the white people are safe and higher and at the top in the social heir achy.

camera shots/angles:At the start of the scene Alex is shown as being looked down on by the use of a slight high angle shot, this presents him as being small and as if he is not good enough as able bodied people. The woman offering to help them in the clip is shown with a slight low angle shot as if Alex is looking up at her, his brother is shown in a normal straight on shot which could show these characters have more power over Alex. There is use of over the shoulder shot frequently from Alex talking to his brother. When looking in the mirror and when they are both talking to the woman in the shop, the brother is always in the centre of the frame and Alex is shown more towards the side of the frame linking in that he is less important and linking to stereotypes such as disabled people being marginalised.
sound:
There is diegetic sound of Christmas music, it is very happy music which contrasts with Alex's bad mood.
editing:

There is the use of cutting between frames to flit between characters.
mise en scene:
Alex's costume is very dull, he wears a brown buttoned up jacket with denim jeans and a grey scarf. The shop is very bright and has a Christmas festive theme with lots of colours.

Gender representation

How is gender represented in TV
Male stereotypes:
Strong
Agressive
Virile
Arrogant/cocky
Dominant
Don't show emotion (emotionally weak?-women's view)/(emotionally strong?-mens view).
Sexist
Independent

Female stereotypes:
Weak
Calm
Considerate
Fertile?
Sly/sneaky- see more women doing things behind mens back than vice versa.
Submissive
Emotional
Intelligent (thoughtful)/ Unintelligent (scatterbrained/act ditzy).
Dependant(on men).

90210 TV drama gender representation:Female
Within 90120 there is a female character Naomi Clark, she is one of the main characters and she appears to be shallow due to her rich and popular status. She comes across as snobby and an airhead as she plays dumb to impress the boys which is a stereotype for a teenage girl linking to the 'dumb blonde' stereotype. However as you get to know her character it is revealed that she is sensitive which is also a stereotypical for women. She comes across as very self obsessed, vain and narcissistic, she treats people as they are beneath her and can be very sly and sneaky towards people. Her character supports the stereotype of being emotional as she has had tough life and is over dramatic. She also supports the stereotype that women are dependent on men as throughout the series she is always wanting to be with a man and have a relationship.
Male:
Liam Court is one of the main male characters in 90210, he is portrayed as a bad boy and is stereo-typically moody and unemotional. He is introduced as valiant, condfident, acting tough however doesn't give much away about himself. He is typically insensitive and plays the girls.

Gender representation in Luther:
Luther: The character of Luther is shown as not a typical man, this is due to it seems during the conversation with Alice he lacks the power. He is asked a lot of questions and doesn't seem in control. He does show emotion which is not stereotypical of a man when Alice questions him about his marriage as he goes very quiet. However he is a stereotypical man as he comes across very strong willed, however when he resists a sexual advance from Alice
this would be considered not stereotypical He is very direct and in the way he speaks he comes across as confident speaking loudly and clearly. He is not a stereotypical man as he doesnt' seem to be manipulated when Alice talks to Luthers posture is very relaxed in the way he stands slouching and keeps his hands in his pockets. It is seen as stereotypical that he has a beard, this is considered manly and his particular haircut is also considered to be manly. As for his costume Luther wears a dull, grey tweed suit with his top button undone and his tie is loosened showing he has a relaxed style. His business dress shows he is very focused on his job and reserved.
Alice:
The character of Alice is not stereotypically weak as some women are portrayed on TV, she is not emotional and this is shown when she speaks about the death of her dog she does not get upset. She comes across as quite strange and is very manipulative when talking to Luther. She seems in control of the conversation and has the power, she is very calm and tries to wind him up and wants to make him loose control. Alice is intelligent and fully understands the male and female dynamic, she openly talks about sex making out that she gets a lot which is not stereotypical. Her apartment is very neat and tidy, it has dull colours and appears very boring. This is not very feminine, it features the black hole poster on the wall which she refers to and there is also a telescope on the balcony. Alice is always linked to evil due to the fact when she talks about the black hole, the music used makes it sound sinister and her character seems strange.

Male gaze music video task

This is Beyonce's music video Partition, within the video Beyonce is presented in many ways such as there is the use of sexual connotations in the way in which she acts and dresses.
Here she is shown in a close up where her facial expression suggests romance and sex, it is a expression where people tend to look dreamy, heavy lidded, unsmiling with big heads in the frame shown as overtly sensual and sexual. She tries to use a face which looks seductive to attract the man in the video.
This shot has been taken 30 seconds into the music video, within this screen shot Beyonce is wearing an outfit that overly shows off her body, this pulls in her waist and empasizes her chest and the size of her hips and bum. She is also shown in front of a car wearing what appears to be fancy lingerie, this reveals a lot of her skin having connotations with sex and pleasure. The garment is black and simple and this would appeal to the male gaze as a lot of her body is shown off therefore viewers will want to look at her.
Throughout the video her body is thrown forward and she pushes it into different positions to represent sex. This then exaggerates her body and the camera focuses on just her body parts rather than her face. There is also a man featured in the video who appears to be her lover and who she targets within the song, the way he touches her at points in the video adds to the male gaze due to men therefore wanting to be him and look at her.
At the time of 1 minuet she is seen wearing a very small amount of underwear in a gold colour, also wearing a head dress which hides all of her hair. This appeals to the male gaze as she comes across as naked due to the tiny lingerie showing off her bum almost completely. The use of colour on the garment also makes her look naked as gold is very similar to her skin colour and considered a luxury colour to make her look 'sexy'. Her hair is completely hidden under a head dress to show off as much skin as possible and she wears high heels to exaggerate the length of her legs. The position she is in also can be considered sexual in the way she is leaning forward and pushing her bum out.
Here she is represented as fully naked apart from her high heeled shoes, this has been shot so that her body looks like a shadow so viewers cannot see her fully naked, however you can see the full outline of her body. She dances over a prop to make herself look sexy and make people think of sex and pleasure. Her hair is down and messy. Generally when she is in the frame Beyonce makes a lot of eye contact with the camera to draw viewers in and seduce them in the looks she gives, she uses facial expressions such as invitationally and romance commonly.
Towards the end of the video she is shown pole dancing and behind bars, this makes her look like a stripper which has obvious connotations with sex. The lighting in the shot also shows an animal leopard print on her body which could link to girls considered 'sluts' as leopard print can sometimes be associated with cheapness on some clothing and what strippers would wear, not that Beyonce is a slut however the girls in the video feature leopard print on the underwear such as on the bra in the picture therefore linking in with sex and the male gaze.

Skins episode 1, Representation

Camera:
When Tony is first seen in his bed at the start of the scene the lighting on his face shows another outline of his face on the pillow next to him. Birds eye view is used to show full bed set and Tony laying in it.
Editing:
Uses cutting between frames.
Sound:
The theme tune for Skins is classic and out of fashion compared to the content of the programme which is about young people. The tune is upbeat and catchy. Non diegetic sound and diegetic sound are both used. Such as diegetic sound within the scene like the music being played loudly when sneaking his sister in and non diegetic sound is used when the music is played over the top of the programme when Tony is exercising.
Mise en scene:
Within Tonys bedroom everything is perfectly a line and neat. His room is mostly white and features props like retro film posters such as Blow up-Antonioni and 8 1/2- Tedenico fellini. His bed set has a naked man and woman on and when he opens his draw his clothes are perfectly folded.
Representation of Tony
Tony is represented as a stereotypical teenage boy, he is rebellious by disobeying his dad and he is very manipulative in the way he acts towards him and how he sneaks his younger sister in Effie, also showing he is intelligent. However you could also say he is not the stereotypical teenager as he does not snitch on his sister and helps her out. His character is also passive aggressive towards his dad and acts as if he is in control in of his household. Tony is represented as a stereotypical teenager as he stares at the woman across the road wanting sex/lust, the character is very narcissistic as he looks as himself in the mirror and seems obsessed with his appearance. He works out with an exercise routine when he gets up and chooses his clothes to make himself look good. He has a smart style wearing chinos, a plain red t-shirt with a black v-neck jumper and white shoes. He also has a normal stylish haircut . Tony is almost presented as OCD due to the mise en scene in his bedroom such as the clothes in his draws are perfectly folded like in a shop. He is shown as obsessive due to how when his alarm goes off he is already awake and he is lying perfectly in the middle. The character seems intelligent because he is reading a Jean Paul Sartre book and Tony is popular and is the ring leader of his friendship group. Tony and Sid are binary opposites in the way they behave and look/dress, Tony is patronising towards Sid and sees him as a figure of fun. Tony is controlling of his friends and sexist to the girls like Michelle, his behaviour towards her is unacceptable and he objectifies her showing that he is confident and arrogant.
